Last throes of January 2011 (revised)

Revision: see Notes

A pair of major car bombings targeted checkpoints on the outskirts of the Shi’ite holy city of Karbala today, killing at least 51 people and wounding an estimated 200 others. The vast majority of the casualties were pilgrims, headed to the city for religious rituals.
So far no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but it is widely assumed that it is one of the assorted Sunni militant factions linked with al-Qaeda in Iraq....

Defenders of the "war on terror" policy would predictably claim that terrorism would be worse without having destroyed Iraq and Afghanistan, and beginning to destroy nuclear-armed Pakistan (thanks to the U.S. government - see How US Helped Pakistan get nukes), and it's up to us to disprove it. Perhaps it would have been worse here - more 9/11's - until the neo-cons got their war on civilization and mankind.

Revision: : inserted "Pakistan" after "nuclear-armed" and added "on civilization and mankind" at end.
