Considering the number of bad decisions that went into this "perfect storm" of horror and grief, and the proximity of the disaster to the Earth Grid, I suspect the involvement of the Spirits of Darkness. Of course, there's no way to prove their involvement, because their influence can take the form of a thought, a feeling, or an urge. For more on their influence, which can include temporary possession, see Andrea Yates and the Spirits of Darkness.
My point is that the captain and crew might have been influenced to make these bad decisions by spiritual beings (angels aligned with Satan) who are masters of manipulation, who might have manipulated them into this chaotic situation and taken advantage of the chaos to trick them into making bad decisions.
However, to say that their intent was purely evil, or that the results are purely evil, would probably be wrong. The spiritual factors behind such an incident are beyond human comprehension. But it might help the relatives of the victims to know that their Earthly lives weren't wasted, because they will fill a special role in the spiritual world which can be filled only by those who die young.
